Church History

On July 17, 1909 Pinkney Missionary Baptist Church was organized with eight members: Robert Lee, Daisy Lee, Ida Edgerton, John Woodard, Nettie Woodard, Fannie Pittman, Delinda Overman and Nancy Lewis. The Reverend R.W. Harrell served as the first Pastor of the Church. John A. Woodard was Pinkney's first deacon. Mrs. Ida Edgerton served as the first clerk and treasurer. The original church building was a one-room structure.

  • 1967 four Sunday School rooms and two restrooms were added and the sanctuary was remodeled. The Sunday School attendance at that time was 96.

  • 1973 the Church was bricked.

  • 1974 a new educational building was constructed with kitchen facilities, two restrooms and a fireplace.

  • 1975 a central heating-cooling system was installed.

  • 1984 the sanctuary was completely remodeled. Renovations included chair-rails, paneling, new molding, painting, new carpet and new pulpit furniture. The Church also purchased the lot adjacent to the property.

  • 1986 the parking lot was upgraded and the grounds landscaped.

  • 1997 the sanctuary was updated with new pews and carpet. Also the WMU initiated renovations to the Fellowship Building. Renovations included partitioning off the kitchen, new windows and doors, draperies, installing sheetrock throughout and updating the bathroom facilities.

  • 1999 paving of the parking lot was completed.

  • 2000 a 5x8 brick sign was erected at the front of the Church.

  • 2001 two side doors and back door were replaced with bronze frame doors. Kidney-shaped tables and child-size chairs were purchased for children rooms. Vinyl flooring was installed in the Fellowship Building restrooms by the WMU.

  • 2002 the sound equipment in the church and Fellowship Hall were updated.

  • 2004 a 3½ ton heat-air conditioning unit was replaced, sound equipment cabinet was purchased and a new stove was purchased by WMU for Fellowship Building; cubicles built in the nursery.

  • 2005 WMU had additional cabinets and shelving installed in the kitchen along with a bi-fold closet door.

  • 2006 an electric screen and projector were installed in sanctuary. Major renovation were done to connect the main building with the Fellowship Building (four classrooms added, a new Pastor's office, three-stall women's restroom, two-stall men's restroom, a large work area and an electric chair lift). Parking lot was repaired from construction and resurfaced.

Pinkney Missionary Baptist Church is a member of the Neuse Baptist Association and is affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention.
